The trip to Cattyman Falls requires a few smaller lakes and shorter portages. We had originally planned on going to Lake Ima before we set out but due to the weather we stopped a few lakes short, and these falls are on the way.
Like I mentioned in part 1, dressing for the BWCA requires a lot of high fashion choices. Here, I am posing with a layer of long johns, a layer of polyester and a top layer of heavy duty fleece topped with a 15 year old life jacket. On the bottom, I also have a layer of long john, some hidden leg warmers and some youth wind pants. On my feet, I have wool socks and Keens. On my head, I'm wearing a beanie with a lovely sun hat over and I complete the look with polarizing fishing sunglasses and a .22 pistol on my leg.
You can hear the falls long before you get to them and what a beautiful place it was! In the heat of summer, these falls are much more tame and people actually swim in it. Like most of our trip, we had the whole place to ourselves.
We fished the whole way home. And caught approximately zero fish.
When we got back to camp, or "home" like we called it, I was getting chilly again. With the previous night fresh in our minds, we decided to pack up and head back to Disappointment so that we would be closer to help if needed.
We scored an island campsite just before sunset and set up camp. The lake was almost glass and I cannot even begin to describe how serene it was.
We woke up to bright sunshine and Chet was up fishing when I crawled out of bed.
The lakes are crystal clear and you can see to the bottom sometimes, which kind of weirded me out. I don't like knowing how deep of water we are paddling in. Chet was quick to point out the rock forms that were a result of glaciation. Thank you, NHCC.
He hopped in the canoe to find some fish, since there clearly weren't any near our island, and I got breakfast going. When it was almost ready, I fired a single shot to alert him that it was time to eat. He didn't show up after a few minutes and I walked out to the edge of the island to see where he was. I saw what I thought was him paddling on by and I waved frantically with both arms and yelled, "Chet! Hello?!?" He saw me, then kept on paddling. I was muttering and sputtering about him totally ignoring me, then I realized that it wasn't him. Our canoe seats two people and that was a one person canoe. I wanted to dig a hole and crawl right in. I was also kind of conflicted on that guy's reaction. Clearly I needed something and he just kept on canoeing by like I didn't exist, but I'm kind of glad he didn't stop because how embarrassing. He was probably like, "I ain't going to talk to her, that bossy wife. I left mine at home to get away from that kind of behavior."
Chet eventually showed up; the delay was caused by him breaking his fishing line while fishing from an island.
Breakfast was delicious, though. I didn't do too many food pictures but here is one.
Here are the lovely toilets at each campsite, in case anyone was wondering. They are usually situated back in the woods so no one can see you except for the wildlife.
As the sun got higher in the sky, a faint buzzing started coming over the island. It got a little louder, then a little louder, and we then noticed a big cloud of mayflies. They are kind of like mosquitos but they don't bite. They just swarm around you and you are kind of like, "Excuse me? Do you mind?" I donned a beautiful mosquito head net to protect my lovely face from the swarms of bugs. The icing on the cake to my beautiful fashions.
We hopped in the canoe and started out on our morning fishing expedition.
We were astounded as to the number of fish we caught that day.
To be continued.
