Outsmarted

Miss Piper still sleeps in a crib for one, well, two reasons. She can't get out of it and this is the only way she will nap.  With baby coming soon, I've been thinking I should begin the transition to the toddler bed for her, for the fifteenth time, but without her afternoon nap, she is an absolute joy.  I think she could win a whine-a-thon.

I put the babies, as they are dubbed in this house, to bed for a nap yesterday.  Piper asked so sweetly if she could sleep in Tucker's bed and me, feeling like such a wonderful mother, allowed her to do so.

About an hour later, Piper came downstairs, wide eyed and bushy tailed with no signs or symptoms of nap- taking on her little face or in her demeanor.

"I taked a nap!"  she said, smiling so big and bright.
"Did you nap or play?"  I asked her.
"Play."  she replied.
"Did Milo nap or play?"  I asked her, now hearing him asking to get out of the crib from upstairs.
"He played."

Go figure.  Back to the crib it is.

I sent the kids outside to play this morning while I put my eyeballs in and put something on other than my robe. I had grand plans to do a photo shoot with the kids today outside to update my blog banner. While I got ready, I heard Milo wailing from outside.

"Milo has a bloody nose!"  Avery announced, leaping up from the lazy boy.  She had stayed inside to finish her Magic Tree House book.

He came toddling over to me, pointing to his face and crying.

"How did this happen?"  I asked Tucker.
"He fell down."  he said, not giving any further detail.

I held his nose for all of 0.00014 seconds, the most he would allow and chased him around the house to prevent blood from splatting on every surface imaginable.

The bleeding stopped and I went about my getting ready.  That's when I noticed his face was all scraped up and he had random goose eggs on various parts of his head.

"How did Milo fall down again?" I asked Tucker and Piper.
"Well, he was running on the sidewalk and he fell down."  Tucker confessed.
"On what sidewalk?!"  I asked, starting to panic.
"Oh, the one by our house." he said.
"And how did he get on the sidewalk?"  I asked, attempting to remain calm.
"Well, Piper wanted her bike on the sidewalk and she opened the gate and he went out."  he explained.

Breathe in, breathe out.

"And how exactly did Piper open the gate?"  I asked.  It is locked, after all.
"She just pushed it open."  he said.

I went outside and attempted to open the gate without removing the lock.  I wiggled it and jiggled it.  No luck.  I called for the kids to come out and demonstrate just how they open the gate without removing the lock.

All three took turns demonstrating it.  Just push up on the lever, wiggle it a bit and the lock slides to the side, push up a little bit more on the lever and the gate opens.

I stood there, mouth agape, as I realized I was just outsmarted by a six, four and three year old.

The gate is now wired shut and none of the kids so far could demonstrate how to open it.   Looks like Chet will have to do some handy work and I will have to do some more supervision of the backyard happenings.

I tried to take a picture of Milo's face but he wouldn't sit still until he picked up Avery's Magic Tree House book and sang Jesus Loves Me.  "YES, Jeeyah wuv ee!  YES, Jeeyah wuv ee!  Bobo tell me SO!"

So much for taking pictures today.

Real Manly, Chet

It's hard to find the time to blog these days.  I figure once life slows down a bit, I'll start taking more pictures and adding more posts.  But to those I tell that too, they ROFL.  Life doesn't slow down. Chet and I try to squeeze in as many dates as we can, as we hardly even see each other during the week.  Our date on Monday evening started out deciding on a place to eat.  I have to comply with my Weight Watcher's points and Chet is trying to put on weight. So you tell me.  Where do we eat? We ended up getting a Jimmy John's for me (I could eat half) and an Arby's meal for Chet. We were off in search of summer clothes for Chet as his previous summer wardrobe has consisted of clothes he wore to confirmation camp.  In other words, old and out of style.  As I browsed the racks at the store, I noticed something.  Had we just held onto his confo clothes, they would be in style again. His doc warned him that if he didn't start wearing a...

Morning Glory

Our new morning routine consists of everyone waking up at 7:30am, me and Avery showering, everyone dressed and out the door by 8:30am.  It's a great excuse not to workout; there's just no time.  Darn.  I pile everyone in the stroller and we make our one block trek to Avery's school.  Yesterday, I walked her up to the school doors and let her walk in by herself.  I watched her walk with confidence down the hallway until she was out of sight, her empty backpack bouncing around on her back.  This morning, I walked her to the corner and let her cross the street by herself, with the help of the crossing guards of course, and watched her disappear into the crowd of kids who were getting off of the bus.   The teacher who was monitoring the crossing smiled at me and said, "She's so little."   Tell me about it, lady.  She's too little.  I found this pic as I was rifling through my camera.  I always chuckle at Piper's teet...

They'll never forget

Chet was invited to participate in a September 11 program at the high school yesterday, along with all the Buffalo firefighters, police officers and reserves. I didn't work so I thought I'd come along with the kids and cheer them on. I dropped Chet off at the doors. The kids and I sneaked in as the honor guard was marching and hollering and we found ourselves a seat in the back, next to the exit in case anyone had a meltdown. The auditorium was about half full, with most guests being middle aged. The only children that were there were all older than five and knew how to sit still for an hour without making a peep. Let me tell you, this room was silent. As the opening prayer was starting, my kids were starting to get restless. "Mom, who is that guy?" "Shhhh!" "Bow-wow!"   Tucker roofed . "Tucker! Shhh!"  I hissed. "SCREAM!"  Piper had to put her two cents in. "Bow-wow! Bow wow!"   Tucker said...
